Bigger Isn’t Always Better – Choosing The Right Mattress Size For You

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

It’s a common misconception that everyone should buy the biggest bed that they can afford and have space for. The truth is actually a little more complicated than that, and sometimes, bigger isn’t always better when it comes to choosing a mattress size. Of course, in the end, it all comes down to personal preference. If you feel more comfortable in a big bed or a small bed, then, by all means, you should choose a mattress that fits your personal needs. However, you may find it beneficial to think about the following things before you choose the right mattress size for you.

Sharing The Bed / Partner’s Sleeping Habits

One situation in which a large mattress is often favorable to a smaller one is when you are sharing the bed with another person. In order to get the most restful sleep, it’s important that both people have enough space to freely move without disturbing the other person. In situations where one person goes to bed or wakes up earlier than the other, this is especially important to avoid potential conflict. While most couples would prefer to sleep in a larger bed, there are some who swear by smaller-sized mattresses.

Generally, couples who sleep on smaller mattresses do so because they feel that sleeping in close proximity to their partner helps to create a feeling of connection. They often report feeling more emotionally connected to their partner as a result of sleeping close together. While this option is not for everyone, for the people who it works for it’s a major source of comfort. If you think this may work for you, consider bringing it up with your significant other. Who knows, it could be a great boost to both your sleep wellness and relationship!

Choose The Right Mattress Size

Sleeping With Pets

Should you choose to share the bed with your dog or other pet, you may find that a larger bed, even if you don’t have a human partner, is a better option. Animals, especially dogs, have a tendency to spread out and take over the beds that their owners so graciously allowed them to share. There are a number of different opinions about whether or not you should allow your pet to share the bed with you, but should you choose to share the bed with your furry friend, consider getting a larger mattress for the comfort of both you and the animal.

Is It Possible To Have Too Much Space?

Any orthopedic doctor, sleep specialist, or chiropractor would likely tell you that we move in our sleep and that it’s important that we allow ourselves enough space to accommodate this movement. However, many people report that sleeping in a bed with too much space makes it more difficult to wake up in the morning.

Consider how you feel in those first couple seconds after your alarm goes off. Unless you are one of the lucky few who identifies as a “morning person”, it’s likely a struggle to even make the effort to move your arm and turn off the alarm clock. In the winter, it’s difficult to get out of bed because it’s warm under the covers and nobody wants to be exposed to the cold air when drowsy.

There are enough obstacles when waking up in the morning, there is no reason to add another one. When you sleep in a bed that is larger than it needs to be, it takes more effort to roll out of bed in the morning. Rather than simply turning on your side and sliding out of bed, you may have to sit up or even crawl little ways to get to the edge of the bed. This can present a huge problem when combined with early morning laziness and can lead to unwanted usage of the “snooze” button.

A Bed Too Large Can Be Detrimental To Your Morning Routine

Unless you are sharing a bed with someone and have decided that you both need a significant amount of space, it can be detrimental to your morning routine to sleep in a bed that is too large. Everyone is different, and some people will not have this problem as much as others, but it’s an important thing to consider when looking to buy a new mattress. Sometimes, it is possible to do a sleep trial of a mattress before committing to purchase, and this can be an effective way to determine if the size of the mattress will negatively impact your ability to get out of bed in the morning.

Conclusion

While many people find that a larger mattress is a good option, others will decide that a smaller mattress promotes healthier sleep patterns. Always take the time to look at all of the available options and keep an open mind about everything that’s out there. You may be surprised, perhaps a smaller mattress will help you sleep better than that massive California-king size that barely fits through the doorway.

Now you should be able to choose the right mattress size for your needs.
