Tips On How To Prevent & Fix Mattress Indentation Problems

There are many cost-effective ways to ensure longevity in your mattress and fix indentations that are starting to form. Each one of these suggestions on how to fix mattress indentations can be accomplished at relatively no cost.

  • Rotate Your MattressRotating your mattress on a regular basis will help avoid specific areas from being worn down by constant use. Each time you rotate it, you are turning it 180 degrees so that you’re not always sleeping in the same spots. Regular care is good preventative maintenance and can even help with an old mattress.
  • Flip Your Mattress -Turn your mattress over from top to bottom. Two sided mattresses can not only be rotated 180 degrees from head to toe, but also flipped over. Both sides need a break from daily wear and flipping the top surface to the bottom can give your bed the rest it needs. one month rotate, the next month flip it over.
  • Use A Mattress TopperMattress toppers are comfortable, thick sheets used to protect your mattress. A memory foam mattress topper can help by redistributing the weight over and around your mattress so that the pressure is not central to a single spot.
  • Manipulate the Mattress Filling Around – Mattress filling can get dispersed especially as quilting ages and fails. When you sleep in the same spots and positions year after year this forces materials out of their original position. Manipulating the materials with your hand and sometimes even utilizing a vacuum cleaner to help pull or push the filling around the mattress can help to fill up the indentations with loose filling. It can also help to smooth over some parts that are sticking out. A cheap solution when budget does not allow for a new mattress. You may have to repeat the process often as a mattress like this is on its last leg.
  • Place Pillows or Foam Under Your Mattress – Not our favorite choice, but desperate times call for desperate measures. In a pinch with little to no budget it can be another great solution on how to fix mattress indentation problems. By placing pillows or a thin layer or two of polyurethane foam under the spots that are indented or dipping, you can prop the mattress up and make it more even on the cheap.
  • Put a Board Underneath Your Mattress – This short term solution is a winner. Doctors used to actually recommend this as way to increase mattress support for people with bad backs. Aging mattresses usually include an aging box springs or foundations. A foundation that sags will not hold a mattress in position correctly and can make you feel like your lying in a sink hole. Place a piece of plywood on top of your box spring and feel the difference.
