Mattresses That Do Not Sink

Please Stop the Sinking!

One of the most common descriptions people use when labeling concerns or problems related to mattresses is sinking, but what does it mean when someone says they are looking for mattresses that so not sink? Do they mean mattresses that break down and develop body indentations or are describing a mattress’s lack of support that causes the body to sink or sag into the mattress in a bad way?

What kind of mattresses won’t sink?

Mattresses that don’t sink in the middle

Let’s face it times have changed raw materials have significantly increased in price, manufacturers seem to have focused more on profits than quality.  Add in the perception that a mattress needs to last 10 or 20 years by the consumer and we have a recipe for disappointment.  Such life expectancy is no longer the intent of the mattress builders as noted by the Better Sleep Council who says 5-8 is more the norm these days. So what can we do?

While no mattress can last forever or be indestructible many of us remember that there was a time when mattresses physically withstood 10, 15, even 20 years of use. So what kind of mattress may offer a glimpse of once what was the norm?

  1. Bed kits and modular beds are mattresses built with zippered encasements that encapsulate various types of comfort layers that can be replaces when worn helping to extend mattress life by 2 to 3 times.
  2. Latex rubber mattresses may at first not sound alluring but technology allows us to infuse air into super durable layers of Dunlop or Talalay Latex Rubber. Rubber is a material used to make rubber balls, rubber bands and car tires and when built properly resists the sink better than other types of mattresses. Did we mention longest lasting and unmatched feel?
  3. Bariatric mattresses and mattresses built for plus size people. Heavy duty mattresses use superior grades of foam not found in ordinary brand name mattresses. These layers are so resilient they can support people who weight 2 to 3 times more than average size people.
  4. Cheap low cost solutions: Purchasing the firmest 2 sided mattress set you can find and add a replaceable mattress topper that can be easily replaced at a lower cost than buying a complete mattress set.

2 mattress sinking issues premature sagging and lack of support

The most common is problem is premature sagging.

This is defined as a settling of the comfort layers in the spots on our mattress where we sleep. A combination of daily use for extended periods of time ranging up to 8 hours and low quality building materials that don’t last are the key reasons for early sinking of mattresses. The result is a feeling like sleeping in a hole. Others describe a sensation of rolling in the direction, being on the edge of a hillside or rolling toward the center of the mattress.

Mattresses that sink and don’t support

This is a problem associated with one of two problems. The first is buying a mattress that offers less support than expected. Too often we purchase based on price, savings, or others suggestions without really taking the time to properly test rest for comfort and support. The end result is that we buy a mattress that cannot properly support our unique size, shape, weight combination.  The other is time. Over time our body changes, our mattress wears, and our support and comfort needs change.
